After a successful start last year of HERA’s Welding Supervisor Course leading to qualification to Australian Standard AS 2214-2004: Certification of Welding Supervisors, the Structural Steel Welding course will be offered again in 2010. AS 2214 specifically covers all aspects of welding to AS/NZS 1554; the standard to which most NZ structural steel for applications such as buildings, bridges and transport equipment is fabricated. This course has been developed to provide qualifications for people working (or wish to work) in a supervisory role in fabrication/welding industries. The course content provides the knowledge necessary to economically and efficiently meet customer requirements and welding quality control standards. Experience shows that a lack of adequate supervision is a major cause of quality-related problems and time-consuming delays in fabrication contracts.

The benefits of achieving a recognised qualification at the level of a welding supervisor include:
• For fabricators - technically competent staff who can reliably instruct and control fabricators/welders, and can effectively liaise with designers, senior engineers, and customers on welding issues.
• For technical representatives - the ability and confidence to provide customers with high quality service in regards to consumables and equipment that will do the job to the standard required.
• For trades people - career progression above NZQA Level 4 with recognised qualifications and an increased capability in the field of welding technology and quality management.

AS 2214 WELDING SUPERVISOR
The AS 2214 certificate is a readily achievable qualification for those who are supervising structural steel fabrication designed to NZS 3404 and welded to AS/NZS 1554. The course duration is 1 Week with a further commitment necessary of at least 60 hours of self-directed study to assure candidates are adequately prepared for the examinations. 

The course content provides in-depth knowledge of welding fabrication and includes topics such as:
• Welding safety from the perspective of a welding supervisor
• Welding, cutting and related processes as applied to structural steel
• Welding and ancillary equipment requirements
• Welding practice
• Welding production aspects such as workshop planning
• Welding inspection and testing; methods, advantages, limitations and controls
• Basic welding metallurgy of the commonly welded steel grades used in structures. 

Examinations are Paper A Welding Theory and Technology, a “closed book” exam on the knowledge of welding theory and technology covered in the examination syllabus. Paper B Application of Standards is an “open book” exam based on the application of Standard AS/NZS 1554.

International Welding Specialist Course
For further welding education HERA offers the Welding Specialist Course that leads to the International Institute of Welding International Welding Specialist (IWS) qualification. The IWS qualification is issued by the Welding Technology Institute of Australia as the IIW Authorised National Body. HERA is accredited to run the course by the WTIA. It is a comprehensive, truly international qualification covering all aspects of welding and related technology. The course duration is 5 weeks. Dates to be advised.
