Important – Situation update
We are now cautiously optimistic that this can be run as a face-to-face course and the plan for an on-line course has been put on hold.
The course is now offered at HERA House from Monday to Friday (19-23 Oct) with the IWI-B exams held on the Saturday (24 Oct).

This course provides training in welding inspection leading to:
- HERA Welding Inspector Level 1 – Steel Structures
- International Welding Inspector–Basic (IWI-B)
- HERA Certificate of Proficiency in Visual Testing of Welded Joints to AS/NZS ISO 17637:2019.
Course content complies with requirements of the International Institute of Welding (IIW) and HERA requirements for the training of welding inspection personnel.
On the completion of the course, the candidates will be able to perform essential duties of the welding inspector within the scope of AS/NZS 5131 Section 7 and Appendix I such as the revision and approval of welding procedures and welders’ qualifications, report visual examination of welds in accordance with the standards and specifications.
The course is recommended for the professionals who perform in-house visual examination for the fabricator and those seeking recognition as CBIP Certified Welding Inspector.
Course Entry Requirements
The prerequisite to this course is the Welding Inspection Part 1 (AS 2214 Welding Supervisor Course).
This course requires proficiency in the comprehension and writing of English as used in the engineering industry, basic mathematics, and the ability to write reports
The course covers the scope of inspection activities: the role and responsibilities of a Welding Inspector, welding terms and definitions, mechanical testing on welded joints, types and causes of weld imperfections, welding procedures, approvals and welder approvals. It also covers NDT Techniques: testing methods, visual inspection, liquid penetrant testing, magnetic particle testing, radiographic testing, ultrasonic testing, pressure test, dimensional tests, quality assurance, and practical work.
The course covers the following standards AS/NZS ISO 17637, AS/NZS 1554 part 1, 2 and 3, AS/NZS ISO 5817, AS/NZS 2980, AS/NZS ISO 9606 as well as other relevant standards.
The course will be especially relevant to:
Steel construction, infrastructure fabrication and maintenance, bridge building, transport industry, machinery, shipbuilding, maintenance.
- Ongoing professional development: HERA Senior Welding Inspector and IWI-S
- The IWI-B qualification is now a prerequisite for the IIW International Welding Inspector IWI-S qualification and the HERA Welding Inspector Level 2 course.
