Welding Supervisor and compliance with the standards
New Zealand Building Code Appendix B1 required steel structures to be fabricated in accordance with AS/NZS 5131 Structural steelwork – Fabrication and erection. This standard references a range of normative standards such as AS/NZS 1554 series, specifies quality requirements in accordance with the Construction Categories CC1 to CC4 and defines competency requirements for people involved. It includes welding supervisors and inspectors.
For all Construction Categories, welding coordination shall be maintained during the execution of welding by welding coordination personnel suitably qualified for, and experienced in the welding operations they supervise.
The fabricator shall employ (or subcontract) a competent Welding Coordinator/Supervisor in compliance with AS/NZS 5131 Section 7.4.3. This Welding Supervisor course meets minimum technical knowledge the requirement for welding supervision of AS/NZS 5131 CC2 and AS/NZS 1554. It also covers technical knowledge requirements for the students progressing to the Welding Inspector Level 1.
The above competency requirements are also included in the Steel Fabrication Certification (SFC) Scheme that was established to ensure compliance of the certified fabricators with AS/NZS 5131.
