HERA is the Authorised National Body (ANB) for personnel qualification for New Zealand under the system of the International Institute of Welding (IIW).

To provide a smooth transition from the national to the international (IIW) qualification system, a national ANB has been allowed to issue IIW diplomas to professionals who have relevant work experience, and who have national welding qualification diplomas/certificates issued before the date the country has joined the IIW Scheme.

New Zealand became a part of the IIW training scheme on to 11 December 2008. At that time the training was offered under the umbrella of the Welding Technology Institute of Australia (WTIA). An independent New Zealand ANB was established in 2013.

Approved Transition Arrangements

The Transition Arrangements (TAs) for each member country are defined by the IIW Authorisation Board. The TAs are approved when a country first introduces IIW qualifications into the national environment.

While most of the eligible New Zealand candidate have already received their IIW diplomas under the TAs, there may be some welding personnel in a position to apply for an IIW diploma using the Transition Arrangement process.

The eligible professionals are those who have relevant experience in the years prior to 11 December 2008, and have a diploma issued by the New Zealand Institute of Welding (NZIW) or CBIP certification, and meet other applicable conditions.
