1 June 2022 | Ep.69 – Cracking the steel standard!

In this episode of Stirring the Pot we’re talking with New Zealand Steel Quality Assurance Manager, Sahar Hosseini.

As a qualified Quality Management System ( ISO 9001) developer, lead auditor and risk management expert with engagement in Health & Safety Management Systems, Sahar brings ten years of international experience to the Steel industry as a materials engineer and technical leader.

Chatting with our Structural Engineer Reza Kordani, we touch on a range of topics from a non-technical perspective. Exploring the in’s and out’s of steel production in Aotearoa New Zealand, diversity in the workplace, the testing and examining procedures that ensure the quality of the products are up to standard, opportunities for graduates and the challenges of writing steel standards.

Some great facts from our conversation…

  • New Steel runs 24/7 and series of quality assurance tests (including mechanical and chemical tests) are undertaken every few minutes! If Sahar isn’t happy with one of the tests, they have to stop the whole production line till she is!
  • They have some fantastic graduate programs. Several younger engineers and graduates join them each year.
  • It took Sahar and the standard committee almost 2.5 years to complete a standard of less than 50 pages!
