Raed El Sarraf

Technical Principal – Materials & Corrosion, WSP

I’m a Chartered Professional Engineer with over 14 years’ experience. My career started as a Graduate Civil Engineer with HERA in 2003, where my role ranged from design to structural condition assessment of steel structures.  Since then I’ve had several design guides, technical articles and conference papers published – mainly focused on the design and durability of steel structures.

As a corrosion specialist, I’ve been involved in numerous structural steel projects in both New Zealand and Australia. Ranging from durability design to monitoring and refurbishment to deliver advice inspecting road and rail structures, marine and freshwater piling, transmission towers, storage tanks and developing a coatings maintenance strategy for the Auckland Harbour Bridge.

I’m also involved with major asset owners, such as the New Zealand Transport Agency, KiwiRail, Refining NZ, Lyttelton Port, and the Bay of Plenty Regional Council – providing technical guidance and support to ensure the continued performance (with normal maintenance) over the design life of the structure.

I’m passionate about ensuring the continued growth of New Zealand metal industries. And, believe being part of HERA’s Executive will allow me to continue supporting this passion – by obtaining a better understanding of the latest structural steel challenges and find solutions to mitigate them.
