Achieving satisfactory performance in welded connections, involves proper connection design, the specification of weld details, fabrication and quality assurance.

In New Zealand and Australia, steel structures designed to NZS 3404 or AS/NZS 5100.6 are required to be fabricated and erected in accordance with AS/NZS 5131 Structural steelwork – Fabrication and erection. This standard makes references to a number of welding-related standards such as AS/NZS 1554 series that are also applicable for applications such as: trailer manufacturing, marine and boatbuilding, maintenance etc.

Engineers are responsible for designing, assessment and maintenance of welded structures require knowledge in welding technology and inspection techniques.

To ensure that the welded steel component or structural steelwork is fit-for-purpose, the engineers need to be familiar with the key aspects of quality management in welding fabrication.

This includes:

  • welding procedures
  • weldability of materials
  • applicable standards
  • weld inspection, and
  • quality as well as roles and responsibilities of parties involved (design, fabrication, inspection).

This webinar series is aimed at introducing the essential aspects of welding technology to professional engineers. It is especially relevant to designers and engineers whose roles include design of steel structures, construction review and the management of steelwork compliance inspection, in-service inspection, management of welding contractors and other relevant welding related tasks.

The webinars will be based on the following standards framework: NZS 3404; AS/NZS 5131; AS/NZS 1554 Part 1, AS/NZS ISO 3834, AS/NZS ISO 17637; AS/NZS 9606.1; and AS/NZS 2980.

These sessions will be presented by HERA’s welding experts and will include a 45 min long presentation followed by a Q&A session.

The following are the webinar series topics:

1. Introduction to welding procedures – hot topics 2023: changes to the welding consumables standards, welding gas for Grade 3 consumables – 15 June 23
2. Introduction to welding processes – hot topics 2023: cobot welding, weld monitoring – 29 June 23
3. Welding of structural steel to AS/NZS 1554.1 – hot topics 2023: welding of RHSs – 27 July 23
4. Welding of reinforcing steel to AS/NZS 1554.3 – hot topics 2023: seismic welds – 17 August 23
5. Weld Defects (OE) – 21 September 23
6. NDT and Inspection to AS/NZS 5131 Appendix I – 12 October 23
7. Welding of structural stainless steel to AS/NZS 1554.6 – 19 October 23
8. Welding of aluminum to AS/NZS 1665 – 26 October 23
9. Stud Welding to AS/NZS 1554.2 – hot topics 2023: latest revision of AS 1554.2: 2021 – 5 December 23
10. Specification of welds for the seismic applications – hot topics 2023: specifying fillet and partial penetration welds – 14 December 23

On the completion of this webinar series, attendees will be able to apply welding knowledge to their projects and communicate quality requirements to fabricators and inspection companies.

Each webinar can be attended separately.

Robert is an international welding inspector (IIW IWI-S) and AS 2214 Welding Supervisor with expertise in the field of welding processes, procedures, training of welders as well as quality management systems to AS/NZS 5131 and SFC

Ozgur Erdem | HERA Senior Welding Engineer

Ozgur has worked extensively on the delivery of industrial plant projects globally in many roles at different levels in the fabrication and construction of boilers, reactors, pressure vessels, structural steels and piping systems of oil & gas, nuclear and thermal power (CCGT and coal fired) plants in Turkiye, Russia, Albania, Libya and Iraq.

He was a lecturer of welding inspection courses at international training organisations in Europe, North Africa, Middle East, Central Asia and South America.

Hafez Taheri | HERA Lead Research Engineer

Hafez is a structural engineer with over 6 years’ research experience in assessment and evaluation of structural components, structural systems and welds.

During his PhD studies, Hafez focused on investigating the potential solutions to address deficiencies in both stainless and normal carbon steel welded moment connections in seismic regions. Conducting experimental tests and finite element analysis to delve into this, as well as exploring research interests in weld sizing for structural steel connections, fatigue analysis in welded connections and structural design and analysis.
